Welcome To Our Alumnae Organisation, 'The Guild'

The Guild seeks to bring together and maintain contact with former students and staff of the Royal High School, Bath and of the former Bath High School. The Guild's President is the Headteacher, ex officio, with retired Heads as Vice-Presidents. The Guild is run by a small committee, led currently by Hilary Williams as Chairman. Other officers are Lynda Bevan (Staff representative), Pamela Gooding (Treasurer), Paula Marsh (Membership Registrar and Newsletter Editor) Anna Lewis (Meetings and Minutes secretary) and Suellen Pedley (Benevolent Fund).  There are also a number of other committee members.

Membership is open to all former students and staff of both schools. To join, use the enrolment form (download below)  which should be printed and posted together with a sterling cheque as described on the form. We are currently investigating ways to take electronic payment.  Please contact Paula Marsh if you are unable to pay by cheque.

As a member, you will receive a Newsletter twice a year with news from the school and from other members. You will also receive information about our annual Reunion, held usually in the autumn, and other occasional events. The Guild operates a small Benevolent Fund which is used to send small gifts, cards and flowers to any member in need of cheering up, usually for reasons of illness or bereavement.

THE GS BLACKBURN MEMORIAL TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship ws endowed by subscribing members of Bath High Old Girls' Guild (now The Guild of The Royal High School, Bath) in affectionate remembrance of the much respected former Headmistress (1942-1969) Miss Gwendoline S Blackburn. She was a great traveller and the vivid and inspiring 'talks' she gave at Morning Assembly are still remembered by 'her girls'.

For this reason it was decided by The Guild that the most appropriate use of the memorial fund was to use the income from the invested money to assist students/former students of the school up to the age of 21, with travel projects. As the interest rate varies, so too does the amount for disbursement each year, the amount has, however, always been a three figure sum. It is sometimes awarded to just one individual and sometimes divided between several worthy candidates.

There seems to have been a tendency in recent years for projects to involve 'good works', but this is by no means a condition. The purpose is to encourage the use of travel and experience of novel cultures, to free the spirit and to develop a well-rounded individual with the confidence to make a valuable contribution to the world.

The process for obtaining an award under this scheme is to complete a written application (available from the Head's PA, Ali Mottram) in the first or second term. Following receipt of these, interviews at the school take place at the end of the second term or early in the third term with, currently, the Chairman of The Guild. The Head may also be present or have submitted comments in advance.

We look forward to hearing from you and good luck!
