RHS students take part in international law conference

Thu 25 Feb, 2010

Some of our IB and A Level students enjoyed the hospitality at the sumptuous London HQ of Allen & Overy, one of the world’s top international law firms on Tuesday his week. The students were among just eight schools from across the UK who were invited to take part in a one day symposium on international humanitarian law (IHL) organised by the British Red Cross in partnership with Allen & Overy. They had to submit a 250 word statement arguing their case for inclusion of a ten strong delegation from the school. The event is part of a wider initiative to raise the profile of IHL amongst young people, through inclusion in schools’ citizenship education programmes. The keynote address was given by Martin Eaton, Legal Consultant to the Council for Europe on Democratic Citizenship.  Following a briefing on the Geneva Convention and other aspects of ‘the rules of war’, the students entered into a role play exercise which took up most of the day.Stepping into the shoes of the various parties involved in an imaginary armed conflict, the students had to decide, as the conflict unfolded, whether IHL had been breached and what  course of action should be taken. At the end of the day the groups fed back their findings and conclusions to a panel of lawyers and experts from Allen & Overy and the British Red Cross.

This was an outstanding opportunity for our IB students to demonstrate some of their knowledge and understanding of world affairs that is at the heart of the IB philosophy of helping young people to become global citizens.  It was a great experience for them all and thanks are due to Mrs Holloway, our IB co-ordinator for encouraging the students to apply and for making all the arrangements for the day.

The students will now become 'ambassadors' for the Red Cross programme and help to run workshops for younger pupils at local schools.
