A Relay Good Achievement

Swimming Four pupils from the Royal High Junior School have got through to the finals of this year's National Primary Schools Team Championships. Alex Withey, Izzy Mcnab, Alex Hayman and Isobel Staines will be competing in the 4x25m mixed stroke relay, comprising of the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Head of Sport Clare Elsley said: "This is a great achievement and they have worked really hard for this success. It will be a wonderful experience for them to compete with the very best in the country and to enjoy the atmoshphere of a national sporting competition in an Olympic standard pool." The championship which is organised by the English Schools Swimming Association, is one of the country's premier competitions for young swimmers and is being held at the prestigious venue of Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield. The Royal High team is one of just two from the whole of the South West to make it to the finals and qualified following their success at a recent ESSA regional competition at Millfield. Meanwhile a team of 12 runners and swimmers from Years 5 and 6 pulled out all the stops to achieve first place overall in this year's independent schools duathlon championshsips at Stonar School last week. The event comprised 200 metres in the swimming pool (ten lengths) followed by a 1km run. With the clock still ticking between the events the competitiors had no time to lose, running in their swimwear and hats. It is the seond year running that Royal High have secured the team trophy and there was individual success for Isabelle Philpotts, who won her event in an excellent time of 5mins 30secs.
