Athletes on Track for National Stages
From The Bath Chronicle Thu 19 May, 2011
Athletes The Royal High School enjoyed success when they took two teams of 12 girls to Yate Outdoor Sports Centre for round one of the 2011 ESAA English Schools Track and Field Cup. Despite their limited training due to the disrupted start to the term and the University of Bath track being out of use, the girls showed their determination and ability by producing some excellent results. The junior team, featuring girls in Years 7 and 8, were the overall winners with 322 points, while 281 was enough to earn top spot for Royal High's Year 9 and 10 pupils in the intermediate competition. Charlotte Davies was the outstanding junior performer, earning 37 points with her 21.21m javelin throw, while Georgina Cornish ran an excellent time of 2mins 36secs in the intermediate 800m. Both teams are now awaiting the call-up to represent the South West in the national semi-finals next month. Meanwhile, 12 Royal High girls took part in the Avon & West of England open Track and Field Championships on Saturday, achieving some superb results. In the Year 8 age group, Sophie Langman reached the 100m final and Lucy Evans was second in the 75m hurdles, one ahead of Ciara Gill. Izzy Dickinson ran a personal best in the 800m and Ciara Gill won the javelin competion. The Year 7 achievements were equally impressive, with Alex Withey clocking 5:27 to finish third in the 1,500m before clearing 1.30m for second spot in the high jump. School-mate Alex Hayman was third after clearing the same height.
