GEOMETRY’S TALK GIVES STUDENTS NEW ANGLE
From The Bath Chronicle 13 December 2007
Royal High students have been learning a lesson in public relations from an industry insider.
Public relations consultant Linda Donaldson founded her own agency, Geometry PR, in 2001 and now manages a team of PR consultants and a national client base.
Last month she took time out to talk to 84 sixth form Royal High students about life as a public relations professional.
The pupils also learnt how to use basic PR skills to their advantage when applying for employment positions.
The event came about as a result of an earlier presentation to the Federation of Small Businesses on why PR is not all about spin and how it can provide real business benefit.
Linda said “I’m pleased to see there is so much interest in our industry from school leavers.
“PR and marketing is now one of the top three career choices in the UK, however we see from many of the job applications we receive that there are some misconceptions as to what public relations activity actually comprises and what skills are needed to be successful at it.
“I hope this presentation helped the pupils here move into the job market with better insight and realistic expectations.
“It was good to see such enthusiasm and obviously high academic standards among the pupils here.”
Royal High School business studies teacher Deryck Goodman said “Bringing business people into the school helps students to realise that their own career prospects increasingly depend on developing the kind of transferable skills that employers are looking for.
“Our experience has been that local businesses are very willing to support our initiatives in enterprise education and careers guidance.”
Geometry PR is a Chartered Institute of Public Relations accredited agency and every consultant in the team holds membership.
The agency has been honoured with two silver CIPR awards for its campaigns over the past three years including work for the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association and a comprehensive trade campaign across four different brands for the IKO group.
Linda is also a member of the Institute of Directors, Associate member of the CIPR and a mother of three.
The agency offers paid work experience placements to undergraduates and graduates.

I LEARNED A LOT FROM MY TIME TRYING PR
from The Bath Chronicle 13 December 2007
Royal High student Lily Peters spent two weeks working with Geometry PR in August.
The 16 year old was given the chance to work in the heart of the company’s operations, talking to magazines and publishers and researching their individual market needs.
Lily was asked to draft press releases for clients and sourcing the most appropriate media outlets for each customer.
She said “From my experience and the tasks set at Geometry PR I found new confidence in working with people and discovered talking on the phone is not as scary as I first thought and is an excellent way of finding information quickly.
“My computer and research skills became much better as I understood how to narrow down information and find it quickly.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Geometry PR, and discovered I would definitely like to venture into the world of PR, perhaps focusing more on the side of marketing or advertising, as I would like to be more involved in the art and design side of things.”
