GIRLS’ SCHOOL MOVING TO ‘BEAUTIFUL’ VICTORIAN HOUSE SITE
An historic Victorian building in 11 acres of beautiful grounds will be the new home for the youngest pupils of a Bath girls’ school.
Both the Royal High Junior and Nursery Schools will be relocating from Lansdown Road to take up residence at Cranwell House in Weston.
The schools will be based there from September 2009.
The property, which used to be home to Summerfield School before it relocated to Odd Down, was placed on the market by Bath and North East Somerset Council in November 2006 with a £5 million price tag.
Royal High Headteacher James Graham Brown said: “I am thrilled to be able to make this announcement to parents. Cranwell House is a wonderful, nurturing environment for children to learn in.
“The light and spacious classrooms look out on to beautiful grounds and we are extremely fortunate to secure this splendid piece of Bath’s heritage for the school.
“Whilst it is a similar distance from the city centre to our current junior school, it offers our families more convenient access, whether arriving on foot, by bicycle, car or bus.”
Plans are also in the pipeline to create a school allotment.
Barbara Harrison, chief executive of The Girls’ Day School Trust, said: ”This represents a major investment by the trust in responding to changing local needs and securing the best for all our young people in Bath, across the age ranges.
“We have absolute confidence that The Royal High School will use the superb new facilities being provided to a great advantage.”
Cllr Colin Barrett (Con, Weston) said he was pleased the site would not be used for housing.
“This decision will be welcomed by everyone is Weston, particularly those who live near the building,” he said.
“We would like to wish the school a long and happy future on the site.”
Parents are being invited to attend an information evening on Wednesday 23 April when plans for the school will be presented.
