Maths Whizkids Show Off Talents

From The Bath Chronicle Thu 25 Mar, 2010

Young mathematicians from schools across the South West have taken part in a day of number crunching in Bath.  Almost 100, 11-14 years olds took part in this year's regional finals of the Team Maths Challenge at the Royal High School.  The teams went head to head in a variety of problem-solving and brainteaser exercises to test their ability to work together against the clock.  The three highest scoring teams received prizes from Professor Geoff Smith from the University of Bath.  Maths teacher Nikki Cologne-Brookes said she was pleased with the way the event had gone.  She said: 'It is very encouraging to see the high level of commitment and enthusiasm among the students.  The Team Maths Challenge is a demanding event as well as hugely enjoyable.'  The schools from the Bath area taking part were Oldfield, Ralph Allen, St Gregory's, The Royal High itself, Kingswood, Monkton Combe, Monkton Prep, Prior Park College, King Edward's, St Laurence and Writhlington.  All the participants received a certificate and a geometry set, but the winning team from Clifton College in Bristol have now made it through to the national finals in London on 21 June.  The competition is organised by the UK Mathematics Trust, which is an educational charity that promotes enjoyment and interest in the subject among young people.
