Pupils Clown Around to Mark a Very Special Anniversary

From The Bath Chronicle.  09 October 2008  The Royal High School celebrated its 10th birthday in style with clowns, circus performers, face-paining and a hog roast.  Luckily the weather held off as the birthday party, organised by the Friends of the Royal High, saw audience members young and old enjoy the talents of an escapologist, a magician, and a ‘twirl girl’ performing on a suspended rope for the ceiling.  People were invited to tuck into the food before going into the big top to be entertained by Happy’s Circus. One of the organisers, Sally Kendall, said:  “This birthday party is a fun, family event to celebrate the 10 years of the school under its current name.” The school was formed from the merger of the old Bath High and Royal Schools. Caroline and Ross Manaton took their four children, Ellie, Alex, Freddie and Toby along from the show.  Fifteen year old Ellie said:  “I thought the circus was very good.  I was laughing along with the kids.  Even though it was aimed at the younger ones I still thought it was very entertaining.”  Mrs Manaton added:  “When the school holds an event like this we like to come along and support it.  I thought the show was very impressive.” Children will be given the chance to learn circus skills for themselves during a series of workshops to celebrate the school’s healthy eating policy.  The Royal High’s junior section is the first independent school in Bath and North East Somerset to receive Healthy Schools status, which recognises the school’s work on physical education, healthy eating and emotional well-being.  To mark the occasion youngsters will be learning how to juggle, walk on stilts, ride a unicycle and spin plates.
