PUPILS RISE TO MASTERCHEF CHALLENGE

From The Bath Chronicle Thursday 10 July 2008

Cries of “Ready, Steady, Cook” were heard as budding young chefs battled it out at a Bath school.

Eight pupils from the Royal High School took part in their own Masterchef competition, with best-selling cookery author Jane Middleton acting as judge.

The event was aimed at developing the children’s interest in healthy, good quality food.

Head of Food Technology, Tiffany Teasdale, said: “They are using only original ingredients and really have to think on their feet as they don’t know what most of the ingredients will be.”

First prize went to Ella Howard for her baked chicken in rosemary cream sauce, served on a bed of asparagus and linguine.

Ms Middleton, who was the winner of the 2007 Independent and Glenfiddich restaurant critic competition, was impressed with the children’s work.

She said: ”I am bowled over by the remarkable standard the students achieved.”

Second prize was awarded to Martha Holmes and third to Mary Corp.

Meanwhile, 80 Year 10 students from across Bath attended a world poverty and climate change conference at the school.

The day featured a number of high profile environmental speakers who worked with the children to try to find solutions to global and local problems.
