Pupils Stand Up to Poverty

Students at a Bath school have taken part in a record-breaking 'stand' against poverty.  Pupils at the Royal High School joined millions of people across the world in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the number of people literally standing up for a single cause.  The whole school took part in the event during a morning assembly, as part of the United Nations' International Day for the Eradication of World Poverty. Students also held up banners displaying the internationally agreed Millennium Development Goals, which include halving the number of people living in extreme poverty by 2015.  There were also related activities for pupils to take part in, such as meeting representatives from different charities, learning how to build a water purification plant and preparing a day's worth of meals using only the ingredients and quantities available to the average Kenyan.  The day was organised by the sixth form college's International Baccalaureate (IB) students.  IB co-ordinator Angharad Holloway said:  'An important element of the IB philosophy is that students should become global citizens.

"A community theme in the diploma programme for thenext three years is 'sharing our humanity'.  I have been delighted to see them take such a proactive stance.  They really are driving this whole school event."  National organisers have yet to announce if the record has been broken.
