Right Royal Success for Sports Stars

From The Bath Chronicle Thu 17 Nov, 2011

Royal High pupils from The Royal High School have tasted success both on the netball courts and in cross country running recently.  The under-19s netball team will represent Avon at the National Schools competition's regional final, to be held in Bournemouth in January, following their success at the county round last week.  A perfect record of seven wins out of seven saw Royal High top their group.  They began by beating Redland 12-1 and Backwell 16-2 before emerging as 7-6 winners over the tallest side in the competition, Clifton College.  Victories over John Cabot Academy and Winterbourne, who were defeated 14-0 and 10-6 respectively, paved the way for a 15-4 revenge win over old rivals Wellsway, a side Royal High lost to earlier in the year.  Royal High then beat Nailsea 21-1 to set up a meeting with BGS, who qualified from the other group, in which the Bath girls came back from 3-1 down at half-time to win 7-3 and secure their spot in the next stage of the competition.  The under-19 squad comprised of Fran Lee-Barber, Georgie Pool, Flo Yates, Steph Meech, Izzy Johnstone, Holly Guscott, Izzy Bruce, Becky Cornish and Jen Macklin.  At the B&NES Cross-Country Championships, Alex Withey led from start to finish to secure an emphatic victory in the junior girls' race.  Izzy Dickinson came tenth and Sophie Langman 11th in the same category, while Charlotte Penny, Emily Williams, Molly Spearman, Alex Hayman and Kathini Logut helped the juniors finish second in the team competition.  Izzy McNab ran a confident race to come third in the minor girls' race, with Emma Balfrey hot on her heels in fourth.  Both will go on to represent B&NES in the Avon Championships.  Alex came a fine 14th and was followed home by Izzy and Emma as Royal High finished tenth in the junior team event at last Saturday's South West finals at Millfield.  The inter team also ran well, led by Claudia Dickinson in 19th place.  She was closely followed by Kathini, Izzy Dickinson and Charlotte as the team secured an excellent eighth place finish in a busy and high quality field.
