Scholarship for Head Girl

From Bath Chronicle Thu 1 Oct, 2009

A Bath sixth-former has won a prestigious university scholarship because of her ambition to give banking help to poverty-stricken people in Africa.  Jo Pinkard, who is head girl at the Royal High School, is one of three students across the country to have been given the Nomura Investment Bank Scholarship.  The national scheme aims to help talented young women by sponsoring them through their undergraduate studies and giving them a paid internship during the holidays.  Jo, who is 17, is hoping to study philosophy, politics and economics at university but rather than working as an investment banker, she wants to work in international development with the World Bank.  Jo said:  "I would like to work to help set up a microfinance bank in a country like Ghana.  Women are often the ones who will use savings and profits to improve living standards and invest in education."
