Students Get Talking
From The Bath Chronicle Thu 8 Jul, 2010
Secondary school children from across Bath have been brushing up on their foreign language skills during a competition in the city. Around 40 young people, aged between 11 and 17, took part in the event at the Royal High School. The competition was organised by the Routes into Languages initiative, led by the University of the West of England. Each student gave a presentation in either French, German or Spanish and were judged on their language skills. Project Director Irene Wilkie said the aim was to encourage more young people to continue studying languages. She said: "It is so encouraging in this difficult time for foreign language teaching in our schools to see that there are still many young people who really do possess excellent foreign language skills and have an enthusiasm for language learning. The older students were a real inspiration to the young ones and even the teachers commented that it had given them a boost to be involved in such a celebration of foreign languages."
