Week to turn pupils into friends of the earth
From The Bath Chronicle thursday 22 May 2008
Children at the Royal High Junior School are this week enjoying a programme of themed activities about caring for their surroundings and the world’s resources. The school’s Eco Week is being supported by local artists and musicians, along with education and community groups. Among the visitors have been Sarah George, from Bath and North East Somerset Council, who explained how its green box collection scheme works and how household waste was recycled, and artist Edwina Bridgeman, who makes sculptures out of driftwood and scrap metal. A highlight was a music workshop run by Bath-based World Music group Baka Beyond. Members of the group regularly visit the fragile Cameroon rainforest, which is home to the Baka Pygmies, whose rhythms and melodies inspire their music. Head teacher Helen Fathers said: “This has been a major curriculum event for the whole school. “The activities have been carefully chosen to help the children appreciate that their surroundings are precious and need all of us to look after them.”
