Young Dragonhearts Discover Joy of Reading

From The Bath Chronicle Thu 18 Mar, 2010

Youngster at Bath schools have been learning about the joys of reading.  Oldfield Park Infants was transformed into a fairytale land, complete with an enchanted forest and baby dragons.  The theme of the book week was Scales, Fins and Fire and the pupils were given the chance to explore all things magical.  Children from Years 1, 2 and 3 were all given dragons' eggs to care for and now they have 'hatched' they have been able to feed them and groom them.  Headteacher Jo Claridge said the book week was about getting children to use their imagination and think about stories in general.  She said:  'This week takes books as a central theme and then branches out into poetry, literacy and creating stories in their imagination.  Most of the children have been swept up by the dragons in their classroom, even the more sceptical seven-year-olds.'  Meanwhile, pupils and teachers at the Royal High Junior School have been dressing up as characters from their favourity books as part of a literacy week.  Other activities have included a readathon to raise money for charities CLIC Sargent and the Roald Dahl Foundation, book competitions and writing contests.  Lessons throughout the week have been linked to the children's book 'Here Comes Frankie' by Tim Hopgood.  The children have also raised money for Book Aid International, which helps children in poorer countries learn to read.  Everyone has also contributed a piece of creative writing for a special souvenir booklet to celebrate the week.  Literacy co-ordinator Helen gurney said:  'The children have responded to the event with great enthusiasm and produced some wonderful work.  'A passion for reading will stay with them for life and it helps to unlock their imagination and creativity.'
