Chemistry whizz kids are super sleuths
Mon 24 May, 2010
Last week four of our young scientists, Jess, Hannah, Ella and Emily took part in the Salters' Festival of Chemistry held at the University of Bath. In the morning they competed in a practical activity, which required them to use analytical chemistry and problem solving skills to help solve the mysterious death of Captain Salter. They had to identify the possible murderer from some white powder found on the clothes of the body and from an ink stained handkerchief found near the body. It was a good exercise in teamwork and forensic science and our team came a well-deserved first, by not only successfully identifying the murderer (Captain Salter's cook), but also by impressing the judges with the way in which they completed the task and presented their results.
In the afternoon they had to help mend Dr.Who's Tardis by devising a recipe for reducing the temperature of a volume of water to 10.5 ºC in one minute, using citric acid and baking powder. Our team worked really hard on this task and came in joint fourth position. The day finished with an exciting "Chemical Magic" demonstration from the University staff, which was a riot of colour, flashes and bangs. The girls all thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and came away buzzing about science and chemistry in particular.
