Junior Sport: dropped baton proves costly for the Royal High School.

Wed 9 Jun, 2010

The Royal High Junior School put took part in the  up two teams for today's annual Independent  Schools Athletics Championships.

On a beautiful warm and sunny afternoon, the girls were ready and raring to go! With a super sporting music compilation made by Mrs Millard, the event was sure to create an amazing arena for the competition to take place. The field events took place first and the girls supported each other around events.

There were many fine individual and team performances. Chloe Vautier came third in the ‘B' team Long Jump, Alex Hayman won the ‘A' team High Jump and Minnie Karanjavala came 4th in the ‘B' team Rounders Ball throw.

Next came the track events with competitors raring to go from the start! With a motivational team talk, the girls seemed ready to perform. In the 55m Hurdles, Jessica Tucker came 3rd in the ‘A' team final; in the 80m sprint, Joanna White came 4th in the ‘A' team final with Clemmie Ivory-Peters winning the ‘B' team final; in the 60m skipping, Beatrice Warren came 3rd in the ‘A' team final; in the 800m, Alex Withey came 3rd in the ‘A' team final with Beth Jolley winning the ‘B' team final in fine style; in the relay events, the RHS ‘A' team were winning the race when we dropped the baton at the first change-over, but managed to claw back from last place to 3rd place overall in the final. The ‘B' relay team were in stunning form and produced another win of the day for their school.

With only 6 points separating the top 4 schools in this competition, the results were as follows.

A team Results:

6th for the Royal High School (18 points)

B team Results:

1st for the Royal High School (46 points)

Overall results:

1st        Monkton Combe            70 points

5th         KES                             54 points

6th         St Margaret's                 26 points

7th         Paragon                        12 points

8th         Stonar                           0 points

Had the girls not dropped the relay baton in the ‘A' team final, their victory would have meant an ‘OVERALL' victory for the Royal High Junior School! However, it has been a great experience for all involved, and we are extremely proud once again of all the girls involved who represented the school in an exemplary fashion both on and off of the track! Well done!
