Peru Expedition Summer 09

Mon 7 Sep, 2009

On July 17th the highly excited Peru Crew met in Mem Hall to begin their Expedition! They spent the following 4 weeks travelling around this amazing South American country experiencing the food, language, landscape and people. Some of the highlights included the 4 day trek over the Cordillera Blanca and the Punta Union Pass (complete with an altitude of 4,700m); Pick-axing, plumbing and concrete producing in 35’+ heat during the project phase – building a toilet block for a remote school outside Huaraz; A feast of Chicken, Potatoes and Cuy (Guinea Pig);  The massive and diverse market in Chiclayo – home of the local Shaman’s; Visiting the ancient Kuelap Ruins and trekking to the Gocta Waterfall (One of the tallest double waterfalls in the world) and White Water rafting in a tributary of the Amazon. The 11 girls (now in Years 12 & 13) planned and carried out the whole expedition, including managing the budget, cooking for themselves, sorting out the transport and accommodation. They had spent the previous 18 months raising funds to take part and also fund-raising for the project. The money they raised for the project bought 3 toilets, 3 sinks, 1,000 gallon septic tank, a door, cement and some roofing materials for the toilet block. They would like to thank everyone who came and supported them, whether buying brownies or watching the panto!
