Light Fantastic! Year 1 Science

Mon 3 Dec, 2007

Our Year 1 Infants have been finding out all about how light is important to us this week. On Wednesday we had a very unusual and exciting lesson when Martin Gledhill, from Bath University gave a wonderful presentation to the children to show lots of different sources of light, both natural and man made. He showed them   also   The children also learned about the movement of the earth, sun and moon and how this creates day and night. Mr Gledhill is a partner in a Bath firm of architects and also teaches at the university.   All the children received a candle as a special present.

The children will be developing their knowledge further on 12 December when they will be going to the William Herschel Museum in Bath. They will be taking part in workshops on light and astronomy. They will have the chance to make a simple telescope and will use light boxes and prisms to investigate the different colours of light.

Michelle Dawson, who runs a structural engineering consultancy in Bath will also be coming in to school to show the girls some of the other aspects of light, including reflection and refraction.

Do see the photos of Mr Gledhill's visit.
