History-Making Yachtswoman on Trip to School

From The Bath Chronicle Thu 9 Jun, 2011

Pupils at the Royal High Junior School have been treated to tales of bravery from a real-life seafaring hero.  Yachtswoman Anne Barns-Graham, whose maiden name is Miller, visited the Year 6 children to talk about her exploits as a sailor.  In her 20s she was the first woman to sail solo across the Atlantic from west to east, and her success in 1984 paved the way for other women such as Dame Ellen MacArthur.  Mrs Barns-Graham's visit to the school was linked to her autobiography Out of the Blue and the class's literacy project on Michael Morpurgo's classic Kensuke's Kingdom, which tells the story of a family who sell up and attempt to sail around the world.  Year 6 teacher Karen Parsons said:  "It has been wonderful to have Anne with us today."
