Royal High Junior Pupils Try Out Something New
From The Bath Chronicle Thu 2 Apr, 2009
Children at The Royal High Junior School enjoyed a special programme of sporting and outdoor activities last week. Sports Week was geared towards encouraging every pupil to develop an active interest in a sport or other physical recreation. The children had the opportunity to try something new every day, including competitive team sports like football and activities that can be enjoyed singly or with others, such as yoga. "We've tried to put together a programme that will offer something for everyone," said Clare Elsley, the school's head of physical education, who is herself an England netball international. "We hope they will all develop a lifelong passion for some kind of sport or fitness-related activity. We've heard a lot recently about obesity in children, but it's not just about that. There's a lot of evidence that children who keep fit have higher levels of concentration in school, a more positive attitude and greater self confidence." An outdoor pursuits company was brought in to run some of the activities, such as archery and climbing, which require specialist facilities and instructors. 'It's good for them to be gently pushed out of their comfort zone to do something challenging," said Elsley. "We also organised a number of problem-solving team games which required mental and physical effort as well as working with others." The week rounded off with a family orienteering event in the school grounds.
