Years 5 and 6 Musical: Bugsy Malone
Fri 29 Jun, 2007
Year 5 & 6 children have been entertaining audiences this week with their production of Bugsy Malone, the spoof comedy musical set in 1920s prohibition era New York. The gangsters are children and the bullets have been replaced by splurge guns and flour bombs as the rival gangs of Fat Sam and Dandy Dan fight for supremacy.
“It’s unusual for a junior school to perform Bugsy,” said Jo Palmer, the school’s drama teacher. “We chose it because all the children know it as a film, and it is good for them to see how it can be adapted for a theatrical production. It also gives everyone the chance to perform, whether singing, dancing or acting.”
Jazz musicans from the Royal High Senior School provided live musical accompaniment and staff and parents have made all the costumes. All four performances this week were sold out, including Thursday’s matinee, when residents from John Slessor Court, a retirement housing complex in Camden have been invited to join the audience, meet the young performers and enjoy afternoon tea after the performance.
Friday night's audience also featured parents dressed in 1920's New York fashions.
