We are the champions!

Thu 4 Jun, 2009

On Wednesday 3rd June, a handful of selected girls took part in the annual Independent Athletics Championships, organised and hosted by the Royal High Junior School. The girls were split into 2 teams, an A and B team of mixed abilities all competing in track and field disciplines. From the start, the girls were motivated, enthusiastic and ready to perform on the big stage, demonstrating just how capable they are as both individuals and as teams. With wins from many of the girls across all disciplines, the scores started to tally up for the Royal High School. A great start set the tone with Sophie Langman winning the hurdles in a personal best time, just pipping her opponent on the line to take victory. Next came Beth Jolley who also took victory in the B team skipping final at just Year 5. With the weather shining and spirits high, the girls truly believed that they could win these Championships. With an injury to one of the A team members, Emma Russell stepped up to take over, producing a match winning performance in the high jump and earning maximum points for the school. In terrific form, she cleared 1.15m and with a roar from the clearance, it was obvious how much it meant to the team. Then came Eloise Gold with another winning performance in the long jump with 3.09m and Charlotte Penney taking 2nd place with a jump of 3.06m. All girls involved were absolutely outstanding within their performances on the day and should be very proud of their efforts. A special mention to Joanna White who also who came 3rd in her sprint and 2nd in the B team high jump, clearing 1.13m at just Year 5! A special talent to look out for next year, alongside Beth Jolley in the 800m & skipping, Clemmie Ivory-Peters in the sprint and Laura Clifford-Ward in the Rounders Ball throw. The combined teams total meant that the A team came 2nd overall and the B team came 1st overall, making the Royal High Junior School the Independent Schools joint Champions with Kingswood 2009. Head of PE Clare Elsley said "I am extremely proud of all the girls and want to extend a huge ‘congratulations’ to them for their achievements. What a team of athletes, for the moment and for the future."   Well done to everyone who took part!
