Year 5&6 Cross Country Running Championships at Bath University
Tue 5 May, 2009
On Friday 1st May, 5 Year 6’s and 6 Year 5’s took part in the annual KES Cross-Country Championships held at the University of Bath for the first time. With a long and gruelling course ahead of them, and the weather taking a turn for the worse, it was always going to need a spirited effort to complete the course, let alone in a winning time!
The Year 5’s took to the starting line first and sprinted off to gain a good place in the pack. They ran hard for 1.5 miles until they eventually came into sight towards the finishing line. First in from the Royal High School came Molly Spearman in 13th place, followed closely by Yasmin Scarr in 16th place. Tired and muddy, they found extra speed to race to the finish line ensuring that they were not overtaken on the last stretch in. Closely after that came Isabelle Philpotts, Zoe Aston and Alice Perkins, with Beatrice Baskett putting in a sensational effort to complete the team finish! The girls were outstanding in their performances on the day and should be congratulated on their efforts and determination throughout the race. In the Year 6 race, Beth Jolley was moved up an age group to compete and was feeling the pressure of running out of her comfort zone! However, with some great guidance and leadership from the Year 6 team themselves, they managed to calm the nerves of their team and had clearly worked out a game plan with each other. From the start, the girls ran a very intelligent race, moving calmly through the pack without wasting energy. As they approached the finish, the blue shorts were all together as a pack, just as they had started! Kathini Logut was first for the School in 6th place, followed by Isobel Dickinson in 7th, Beth Jolley in 13th then Sophie Langman in 15th. Then to complete the team effort came Beatrice Jones in 21st and Ellie Irish in 23rd! What a performance! To have all 6 runners in before 25th place is a startling effort and a result which other schools could only look in amazement at! There were tears of hurt, joy and emotion by all. This demonstrated just how hard the girls had worked to complete this course and it is to their credit that we achieved such outstanding results on the day. Both Mrs Palframan and Miss Elsley are very proud of the girls and their performances and would like to congratulate them all on their achievements. A team effort combined by both Year 5 and Year 6 meant that the Royal High School came 3rd overall on the day! Well done girls!!! A big ‘Well Done’ and ‘Thank You’ to Beth Jolley also for running with the Year 6 team on the day.
