Fri 18 Mar, 2011
5 girls from our Junior School, in Years 3 and 4 took part in the BANES Gymnastics Competition on Wednesaday this week..
In a packed arena, the girls were professionally warmed-up and were sat in their relevant teams ready for their events. The Royal High School started on the ‘Floor' event, which consisted of a set routine, which had been rehearsed with Caroline at Gym club. A confident start from Alexandra John set the tone for the remainder of the team to follow, with Jessica Selwood next to complete hers. Lottie Blackmore then delivered a super routine, followed by a near perfect performance by Olivia Smith. Last to complete their routine was Charlotte Macrae, who finished in style to leave the girls with a polished start and some good points.
The vault came next - the final event of the day! Consisting of a short run up and jump form a springboard, the girls completed a star jump in the air and had to nail a solid landing, which was motionless on landing. With a warm-up of 3 practice jumps, the girls were ready for action...
Alexandra John led the way once more, with a near perfect jump on her first attempt. The second saw a slight movement of the feet which resulted in a small deduction of points. Jessica Selwood consistently produced 2 stunning jumps, which were grounded on both occasions beautifully. Lottie Blackmore then demonstrated her power, generating enormous and consistent height on both jumps. With one landing solid, and the other with slight movement, again, the small deduction of points were to come. Olivia Smith then highlighted her athleticism by generating exceptional height and poise in the air, only to nail both the landings perfectly. Last to complete the vault was Charlotte Macrae, who demonstrated super poise and control on take-off and landing.
The event results soon came in...
The team event, which consisted of the combined top scores from both events, were added together to create an overall team score. The Royal High score were placed 1st overall, in front of 5 other teams competing from local schools in the area.
The individual event , which consisted of the best combined score individually on both the floor and vault was awarded next. Olivia Smith took the 1st place honours, demonstrating her potential within this activity from 30 other competitors.
All the girls involved should be incredibly proud of their performances on the day and take great confidence from what they have achieved. Well done - a remarkable achievement to say the least!
A really big ‘THANK YOU' to Caroline also, who has put in tremendous amounts of work to help the girls prepare thoroughly for this event. Without her expertise and knowledge of such events and skills, the girls would not be able to compete at this level of competition.
