Where does honey come from?
Wed 26 Jan, 2011
Our Year 1 and Year 2 children had a lovely afternoon finding out how honey is made. The event was one of our Creative Curriculum Topic Workshops. Sister Ruth Spencer, who is one of the school nurses is also a beekeeper. She brought in to school some of her clothing and equipment for the children to explore. They learned why bees are such valuable insects to us and why the bee population is under threat.
For safety reasons, Sister Spencer didn't bring a hive into the school, but she did bring a 'virtual hive', with photos of bees printed on to frames. The children enjoyed searching for the queen.
Trying on the beekeeeper's suit was a popular activity, and all the children had the chance to roll out their own beeswax candles and take them home.
