Autumn Term 2008 Charity Events Update

Already the year has started for the Charities’ team, a lively and hard-working group, who are keen to do even better than previously! The first event was the Harvest Festival: over 280 items of dried and tinned food were brought in to help those in need locally. Mr Peter George received the goods on behalf of the Genesis Trust and explained in our assembly just how the food was distributed. Everyone from year 7 to 13 listened intently and, as a school, we are hoping to become involved still further with this worthy cause. The Macmillan Coffee Morning was held on Friday 26 September and was extremely well-supported with the lure of an Autumn Craft Fair. This was the first time The Royal High had held this event; it started with the hope to have a dozen stalls. By the time the fair was held, an impressive 26 stalls were piled into the Old Chapel. From 7am the buzz of activity predominated as stall holders lugged in clothes rails, staggered in with boxes of pottery and bags full of goodies. The assortment of stalls was wide ranging from bespoke hand bound books to attractive jugs and lots of jewellery to choose from.

When this haven for shoppers and cake-eaters was over, the final total was £1282.22, all of which goes to Macmillan Cancer Support. Many thanks to all the stall-holders, those who ran the café and made cakes and to all the shoppers. This could well be an event to go into the calendar on a regular annual basis!

Year 9  students are leading the way to support Julian House, a local charity for homeless men and women. Julian House is shortly opening a shop in Bath, and memebers of 9B organised a 'cake swap' in which students and staff brought in used items of clothing, bric- a-brac etc, in exchange for home made cakes baked by the students.  There will be an ongoing programme of activities to support the shop so that Julian House can continue its important work looking after vulnerable people.
