School Play Review: It Could Be You

Mon 16 Nov, 2009

Every Autumn there is a major school production which is open to all students from Year 7 to Year 13. Any one can have a part if they can make the rehearsals and this year’s production numbered over 70 in the cast! From Tuesday 10th November to the rather ominous Friday 13th, ‘It Could Be You’, entertained and mesmerised its audience.  This strange and unnerving story explored how far a group of people would go for the chance to receive a large amount of money and was a highly thought provoking and moving production. The school also numbers many pupils who are more interested in working back stage and the production support team, led by the multi talented Bex Key, contained over 30 pupils who ran the show. Stunning costumes by Year 13 student,  Clemmie Greeley, and her able assistants, became luminous in UV light. Freya Chow-Paul, from Year 8, and the school’s youngest ever DSM, ran the performance cueing all the different elements skilfully.  Combining eerie music, expressive and glitzy dance and some wonderful interactions of dramatic moments, the production took the audience on a sometimes uncomfortably emotional and intellectual journey to its powerful climax. Ellie Osborne as the unfortunate Alfred Ill and Tabi Cox as the icy protagonist led a highly talented bunch of actors who, one minute made us laugh and the next, chilled us to the core.

The production directed by Kate Bayes and Ben Pender demonstrated that school plays can be Art and produce performances as powerful and challenging as anything seen in the professional theatre.
