New Art Centre Sees the Light

From Bath Chronicle Thu 4 Dec, 2008

A new £1.6 million are centre has been unveiled at a Bath school.  The new art block at the Royal High School means pupils can move out of their temporary studios in the school's old chapel.  It was officially opened by Chairman of the Arts Council England and rector of the royal College of Art, Professor Sir Christopher Frayling.  Before he unveiled a commemorative plaque, Sir Christopher spoke of the valuable contribution that today's students made to the country's future, through their own work and by inspiring each other.  The new centre has four studios - each specialising in either printmaking, sculpture, drawing or painting - a library and a kiln room.  The Director of Art at the school, Graeme Preedy, worked with Bath architects Tektus to design the bullding, which has been created to allow plenty of light into the classrooms.  Mr Preedy said:  "We are really fortunate to have a building that has been specifically designed around the needs of art students.  Light and space are crucial to a creative working environment.  The large windows also offer inspiring views over the surrounding landscape."  The centre has been built on the site of the previous art block.   Construction work will soon begin at the old chapel to transform it into a new performing arts centre with tiered seating.
