Tavaré talk inspires Royal High students

From The Bath Chronicle Thu 26 Jun, 2008

One of England’s and Somerset’s cricketing heroes of the early 1990s came back to Bath earlier this month.

Chris Tavaré, the former Test opening batsman, gave a talk at The Royal High School on ‘The Art of Captaincy’ to an audience of students and cricket enthusiasts.  Tavaré played for his country in 31 Tests and 29 one-day internationals between 1980 and 1989.  He played a crucial role in the memorable 1981 Ashes series victory over Australia – his scores of 69 and 78 in the famous Old Trafford Test helped to turn the match. In his long and successful Test career he played alongside another Somerset legend, Ian Botham, as well as other cricketing greats, such as David Gower, Mike Gatting and Graham Gooch.  Possibly the finest player of off-spin of his generation, Tavaré also captained Kent for two years before taking on the captaincy of Somerset in 1990.In his talk, which was illustrated with video footage, Tavaré explained the responsibilities of a cricket captain both on and off the pitch, and the qualities it demands. He also talked about some of the famous captains he played under.  The audience then had the chance to question him about his life in cricket.

‘We were delighted to host this event and welcome Chris back to Bath,’ said Tom Morison, Head of PE at The Royal High. ‘This is one of a series of guest lectures by successful sportsmen and women which we hope will inspire young people to take up sport as a career. All of our guest speakers are outstanding role models who have shown what can be achieved when natural ability is harnessed to professionalism and self discipline.'
