Year 7 Geography Fieldwork Day in Bath

Thu 14 Jun, 2007

All of year 7 marched down the hill into central Bath on a mini geography fieldtrip to investigate traffic problems in the city centre. The groups conducted detailed surveys of the volume of traffic passing through different parts of the city centre. They also examined the impact of that traffic on the environmental quality and collected data on the noise levels recorded along busy road sides. One group was very excited as a road sweeper came past adding an unusual vehicle to their tally! They also conducted over 100 questionnaires, asking members of the public for their views on the traffic problem and what solutions they preferred.

Perhaps unsurprisingly one of the least favourite solutions amongst the general public was the use of congestion charging and to make parking more expensive. Most favoured cheaper bus services and many even wanted to see a new tram system constructed. I wonder if they would get that past the town planners! After all that hard work the groups restocked on sweets and ice creams and walked back up the hill in record breaking time.
