Pool heads Royal success on court

The Royal High School reached the finals in all three age groups for the first time in the doubles and Georgie Pool reached the final of the under 12 singles event at the Avon School Tennis Competition at Clifton College, Bristol.
The qualifying rounds for the singles took place on Saturday April 28 and girls winning their boxes progressed to the main draw on the Sunday.
The Royal High School had the biggest entry with a total of 25 girls travelling to the tournament.
Players who qualified for the main draw were Kerry Smith, Charlotte Pool, Emily Jolliffe, Charlotte Januszewski, Katherine Hall, Georgie Pool, Sarah Bannister, Bella Plumbly, Bella Evans and Rioghnach Hannan.
Georgie Pool emerged as the star after playing incredibly well against a highly-rated opponent.
Januszewski, Charlotte Pool and Hall progressed to the second rounds in the under 16 section with Smith reaching the semi-final of the under 19 draw.
In the doubles competition, which took place the previous week, the Royal High teams entered each age group.
In the under 19 girls, Kimberley Green and Kerry Smith beat St Mary Redcliffe 6-2, lost to Clifton College 6-2, beat BGS 6-2, beat Gordano 6-4 and in the final lost to Clifton College 2-6 2-6.
In the under 16 girls competition, Charlotte Pool and Hall beat Wellsway 6-2, beat Colstons 6-4, lost to Clifton College 6-2, beat Downend in the semi-final 6-2 and lost to Clifton College 3-6 4-6 in a close final.
In the under 14 girls tournament, Januszewski and Georie Pool (Year 7) beat St Mary Redcliffe 6-1, beat Redmaids 6-2, beat Clifton College 6-2, beat Clevedon 6-3 in the semi-final, and in the final beat BGS 6-3 6-4.
“All girls should be congratulated on participating, for many it was the first experience of a tournament,” said PE teacher Zoe Tucker.
“Equally, there were some great performances within the competition and the support of all girls particularly towards the younger players was great to see.
“We are grateful to Withy King solicitors for their continued sponsorship of Royal High School tennis.”
