Welcome to The Royal High School

Overview of Modern Languages

At the Royal High School, Bath, we aim to inspire you to study up to six world languages; German, Mandarin, Spanish, French, Italian and Russian are all on offer. Our languages options are not just unique to Bath but also the GDST trust as a whole and offer you amazing choice and diversity.

We aim to provide a dynamic and supportive learning environment where you can develop into confident and successful modern linguists. We run popular exchange programmes with schools in France, Spain, Germany and Italy along with exciting cultural visits to major European cities such as Berlin and Madrid. Beginners’ Mandarin and Russian classes are open to all regardless of age and ability. We are also planning twilight languages courses in Spanish, French, German and Italian for you and your parents should you wish to take brush up on a language or just get a taste for something new.

Our Modern Languages facilities are state-of–the-art. Not only do we have interactive whiteboards and digital projectors in every languages classroom, we also have a dedicated ICT suite for languages. All our audio material has been transferred onto MP3 and put onto the school intranet so that you can practise your listening skills anytime, anywhere. We have the latest software at each key stage; you can even make audio books using advanced speech engines.

Our languages staff are highly skilled and motivated. They employ a wide range of teaching styles and resources in order to cater to all learning styles with fantastic results; since 2004, 21 of our linguists have attained top 5 marks nationally for GCSE, across the range of languages. We have also attained top 10 placings for A level students, many of whom go on to study languages at university.

At the Royal High School, Bath, we love languages and offer our pupils every opportunity to succeed.
