Welcome to The Royal High School

Sport & Physical Education

Facilities

Our sports and physical education facilities are first class. We have a large purpose built sports hall which accommodates a wide range of indoor sports and activities. We have all weather surfaces for outdoor team sports and a good number of tennis courts. Our swimming pool is open from May to October, for both recreational use and serious competitive swimming and training. We have our own athletics ground a short distance from the school. We also enjoy excellent relationships with both Lansdown Tennis & Squash Club and Bath University’s Sports Village. These links enable our pupils to use their fantastic facilities on a regular and scheduled basis.

Fixtures

The Physical Education department is extremely active with fixtures arranged throughout the year in a variety of sports. Netball and Hockey fixtures are run through the Autumn and Spring term and Summer fixtures are focussed around Tennis, Athletics and Rounders. We are fortunate to have an outdoor swimming pool, which enables galas from May to October in a fantastic setting. Additional fixtures this year have included Football, Badminton, Basketball and Fencing.

Tours

The PE department runs an annual multi-sports tour to Barbados taking Netball, Hockey, Tennis, Swimming and Athletics teams. The tour is very much a working partnership between staff and pupils where fixtures are established on tour depending on the strengths and sports of the participants. Pupils and parents play an important role in the tour, and although they are required to undertake fund raising activities, these seem to be surpassed and improved each year. This tour fund, is specifically for the pupils’ activities in Barbados and this year included a private catamaran where they fed turtles and were waited on by Bajan sailors! Equally enjoyed was the scuba diving instruction with a well-known marine biologist and the evening entertainment of stilt-walking fire-eaters. All pupils come back with many stories and fond memories.

An annual tour has been established for Junior hockey. This year we visited Barcelona where the facilities and hockey experience for the pupils was incredible. Water-based astros and high skill levels were the norm and the benefits of their hard work was reaped on return to the UK where pupils quickly put into practice their new skills!

This year we will travel to Holland over October half-term, the tour is offered to years 7 and 8, and we are taking approximately 30 pupils. They will experience the famously good Dutch coaching and facilities and take on some of the local opposition.
