Awards & Bursaries

The Royal High Sixth Form College offers two kinds of financial assistance to students of exceptional ability and promise: Academic/Specialist Scholarships and Bursaries.

Academic and Specialist Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded, irrespective of parents’ financial situation, for entry into the Sixth Form College for all-round academic excellence and for outstanding promise in a specialist area.

Academic Scholarships: Decisions about internal candidates are made on the combined basis of Mock-GCSE results and Heads of Department recommendation. External applicants sit a special examination and have an interview with the Principal and Head of Sixth Form College.

Specialist Scholarships are awarded for entry into the Sixth Form College to internal and external candidates who demonstrate outstanding ability in such specialist areas as art, music and drama. Decisions are made on the basis of an appropriate audition or on the presentation of a portfolio of work.

Guidelines

Parents should bear the following guidelines in mind when applying for the Specialist Scholarships:

Art: An award for art is unlikely to be made unless the applicant can provide evidence of sustained, independent and varied work of an exceptional standard.

Music: Sixth Form College Scholarships will not be made to applicants with less than Grade 6 approximately with merit or distinction for main instrument/voice. It is also unlikely that an Award will be made to an applicant with only one instrument to offer.

Drama: Scholarships will be made to applicants who can demonstrate both outstanding potential and commitment. It is likely that they will be members of theatre groups outside college, and/or that they will have taken Speech and Drama lessons and LAMDA or Guildhall examinations.

Sport: One sports scholarship will be offered for entry to the Sixth Form College. Applicants will be able to demonstrate outstanding promise in a chosen sport or sports and will be regional representatives in their chosen sport. They must submit letters or support documentation from clubs or qualified coaches demonstrating their level of expertise and their commitment. They must agree to play an active and supportive role in representing the school.

Bursaries

Bursaries are awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding all-round academic or exceptional promise in a specialist area. In order for students to qualify for a bursary parents must also complete an assessment of income and assets in order to establish their financial need. Forms are available from the Royal High School, and the assessment is done by the Finance Department at the GDST’s Head Office in London.

Academic and Specialist Awards

Awards are made for entrants to the Sixth Form College, irrespective of parents’ financial situation, for all-round academic excellence or for outstanding promise in specialist areas such as art, music, sport and drama.

The GDST Bursary Scheme

In 1997 the Girls’ Day School Trust introduced its own bursary scheme to replace the Government Assisted Places Scheme. This aims to ensure that, as a member of the GDST, the Royal High Senior School and Sixth Form College are accessible to bright students who would profit from a Trust education, but who could not afford it without financial help. Short-term Assistance

Bursaries are intended to provide financial assistance throughout a student’s time at the Royal High Senior School and Sixth Form College. However, it is recognised that occasions will arise when some form of short-term assistance is required and a small fund (the Centenary Fund) exists for this purpose. It is the policy of the Trust to make every effort to help if possible in order to avoid disruption of a student’s education at a critical point in cases of unexpected family financial difficulties.

Transfer from GDST Schools

For students already within other Trust schools, priority over external applicants will be given, subject to satisfactory recommendation from the Head of the transferring school, and if deemed necessary, the achievement of a satisfactory standard in an entrance assessment or examination. For those for whom a boarding need arises, and who would like to transfer to The Royal High School, special terms are available including the transfer of any award or bursary.
