Amy Sings Solo for Duke

From The Bath Chronicle Thu 30 Jun, 2011

Former Bath Abbey Chorister Amy Lyddon sang solo in front of the Duke of Edinburgh as he stood down as Chancellor of Cambridge University.  The 19 year old former Royal High pupil was chosen to perform the solo Erbarme dich from Bach's much-loved St Matthew Passion at the event to mark the Duke's retirement from the role.  Amy, who has just finished her second year studying French and Spanish at Trinity College, is a mezzo soprano who plans a career in opera.  She said it was a huge honour to sing for royalty.  "Erbarme disch is one of the most beautiful and moving pieces of music ever written.  I just hope I did it justice.  Prince Philip was very nice and joked that he was surprised I still had a voice, given it's the middle of the summer ball season."  In 2009, as a member of the Trinity College Choir, she sang for the Queen as part of the university's 800th anniversary and was introduced to the monarch afterwards.  Amy is touring the UK this summer with the Shadwell Opera Company in the comic opera Albert Herring.
