Olympic contender inspires Royal High athletes
Fri 2 Dec, 2011
We were delighted to host a visit by Olympic hopeful Freyja Prentice on Wednesday. The 21 year old is a very serious contender for a medal at next year's Olympics in the Modern Pentathlon, an event in which she recently won individual bronze and helped Great Britain retain team gold at the Modern Pentathlon Junior World Championships in Argentina. She has a clutch of other medals too, including silver at the 2010 World Championships and bronze at the 2011 World Cup. With youth on her side she still has her best years in front of her.
Freyja trains at Bath University, whose world class facilities and coaching will help prepare her for the big, one day competition in London, where she will run, swim, fence, ride and shoot it out with the best in the world. In the meantime, she has a gruelling training schedule, which sometimes makes for a 12 hour day.
We are grateful to Freyja for taking a break and spending time with our athletes, at both the junior school and senior school. Freyja gave a very interesting talk on nutrition, before addressing a wider audience on her experiences as a leading sportswoman and what it takes to compete with the best in the world. She led a fun session of practical, multi-sport activites with our junior children, in which some of them were able to try on the fencing kit she wore at the recent world championships.
Freyja commented on the enthusiastic reception she was given and the searching, thoughtful questions put to her. We wish her well at London 2012 and beyond.
