Royal High hosts Young Leaders Conference

Mon 26 Sep, 2011

The Royal High School  hosted a gathering of over 150 sixth form students from across the country at the weekend at the Girls' Day School Trust annual Young Leaders' Conference.  The GDST, which is the country's largest group of independent schools,  brought together a distinguished group of women to address the conference, whose theme was preparing girls to match their male peers in the self promotion race at work.

GDST Chief Executive Helen Fraser CBE believes men tend to shout about their achievements more than women and this is one of the reasons that there are more men in senior executive roles in UK businesses.

"One of the greatest weaknesses of women in corporate life is that they tend to sit quietly in a corner, doing brilliant work, and assuming someone will notice how great they are. But unfortunately in busy corporations, you need to claim your successes and be heard - and young women aren't always good at this. Young women need to learn how to articulate their achievements so that everyone from the CEO downwards takes notice."

Delegates, aged between 16 and 18 years,  heared from successful women across a wide range of industries and sectors. All the girls attending already hold positions of responsibility within their schools, such as Head Girls, Senior Prefects or House and Sports Captains. They took  the opportunity to share experiences, develop team work skills and build their confidence as influential girls and inspirational women of the future. The conference lasted from Friday to Sunday and delegates took part in a variety of workshops, tasks and competitions

The guest speakers included:

  • Claire Young: businesswoman and finalist in this year's BBC ‘The Apprentice'

  • Esther McVey, MP and Private Parliamentary Secretary to Chris Grayling, Minister for Employment

  • Felicity Aston, Antarctic Explorer

  • Linn Waites, Film maker and Management Consultant
