Ashdown Swoops in to present case for armed forces pay

From Bath Chronicle Thu 17 Sep, 2009

Politician Paddy Ashdown has made a flying visit to Bath to support a cause close to his heart.  His visit was part of a Liberal Democrat campaign to boost the pay of the armed forces. Along with city MP Don Foster, former Marine Lord Ashdown took to the streets of Bath with a petition seeking a better deal for Britain's troops.  He said:  "It was great to be able to come to Bath and help the Lib Dem campaign to improve the pay of our armed forces.  Every day young men and women are putting their lives on the line, fighting in terrible conditions in Afghanistan.  What is their reward from this Labour Government?  Shockingly poor pay that leaves them on the poverty line and their families back at home hungry.  it is time that our troops received a fair deal and received the same level fo pay as new recruits to the police and fire service.   During his visit  Lord Ashdown also met students from the Royal High School to discuss police and conflict resolution.  The 50 International Baccalaureate students took part in a debate on issues from the outlook for a successful resolution of the allied campaign in Afghanistan, to the legality of the Iran war and the effectiveness of the International Criminal Court.  After the debate, the former Yeovil MP and party leader signed copies of this autobiography, A Fortunate Life.  Peace and conflict resolution is a central theme of the International Baccalaureate diploma programme.
