Hundreds of Pupils Put World to Rights

From The Bath Chronicle Thu 12 Mar, 2009

More than 100 students from across the South West took part in a peace and conflict resolution conference at the Royal High Sixth Form College.  The event was arranged specifically for pupils studying for the global qualifications, the International Baccalaureate (IB), and included talks from some of the country's leading experts on the subject.  It was opened by the historian and broadcaster Professor Saul David, who spoke about the background to the conflict in Afghanistan and what can be expected to happen there in the next 30 years.  There were also talks from serving soldier Lt Col Tim Cooper about the British Army's work in Iraq, Professor Diana Jeater about the troubles in Zimbabwe, Dr Alex Pritchard about the search for peace in the Middle East, and secretary of the Bath Amnesty Group Caroline Butler about human rights in conflict zones.  Organiser and IB co-ordinator Angharad Holloway said it was important for students to learn more about the world they lived in.  She said:  "IB students are encouraged to think of themselves as global citizens and to engage with the major issues that divide or unite people across the world.  It has been a privilege to have such eminent people with us today, and the students from all the schools responded with some excellent questions and observations of their own."
