Thought-provoking view of the war to end all wars

Youngsters at a Bath School have been transported back in time to remember the First World War.  A 50 strong cast of actors, singers and dancers at the Royal High School are putting on a production of the 1960s satire Oh! What a Lovely War. Pupils from all year groups are taking part in the show, which plays out the tragedy of the Great War through the lives of one family.  The play contains moments of comedy and farce and includes a number of well-known songs from the period, such as 'Keep The Home Fires Burning' and 'Pack Up Your Troubles'.Head of Drama Ben Pender said the school put on a large-scale musical production every year and that this year’s choice was to mark the 90th Anniversary of the Armistice. He said:  “I don’t think it should be interpreted as simply an anti-war play.  There are times when there is a reason to fight, but war has terrible consequences.  It’s great entertainment but very thought-provoking.” The performances are being held in the school’s Memorial Hall.  The hall was constructed after the First World War and still contains the stained glass windows that honour those who died.
