New Sixth Form Partnership for Royal High Sixth Form College and Beechen Cliff School

Thu 1 May, 2008

Beechen Cliff School and The Royal High Sixth Form College have announced a partnership that, from September 2008, will enable sixth form students from both establishments to take part in a number of new cultural and sporting initiatives. The Bath Enrichment Partnership is setting up a new theatre company, with a major production scheduled for the autumn term. It will offer students valuable experience in all aspects of staging live theatre, including directing, producing, sound & lighting as well as acting.  The two schools are co-operating closely in sport too, with joint use of facilities and coaching sessions planned. The link up will widen the range of sports and physical recreation on offer and lead to the fielding of some combined teams in rugby and hockey. It is planned that an overseas sports tour will follow.  A Thursday afternoon joint sixth form programme will allow the students to work together. ‘Twilight classes’ are also being introduced to timetable additional subjects, beginning with new AS Levels in Film Studies and Critical Thinking in September. Ralph Hunnisett, a Year 11 student at Beechen Cliff is already looking forward to the first fruits of the partnership. “This is a really exciting direction for the two schools to take. I’m really interested in pursuing drama in the sixth form and having the opportunity to work with Royal High students.”   Later in the year the schools hope to work together in more areas, such as music and debating.   “This is an important strategic development for both of us,” said Beechen Cliff headteacher Andrew Davies. “It shows how closer co-operation between the maintained and independent sectors can enhance the quality of provision for all students. At Beechen Cliff we place a high value on our links with other local providers. I welcome this development between the two schools, whose complementary strengths and record of academic excellence make them ideal partners.” “We have a long history of working successfully with staff and students at Beechen Cliff, including plays, debates and modern languages exchanges,” said Royal High Deputy Principal, Rebecca Dougall. “I am delighted that we are now able to strengthen this relationship with a more structured organisation. It promises great things for our students, particularly in preparing them for the next stage of their education.”
