Breaktime at the Sixth Form College

Subjects: Economics & Business

Overview

Business Studies and Economics give you an opportunity to have a better understanding of the current business and economic issues that affect your lives.   Given the current difficulties for business and the world economy, interest in both subjects is at record levels, with much of the news agenda dominated by the recession and how we are going to get out of it.

They are both highly topical subjects, requiring you to keep up to date with what is happening both in the UK and further afield.  We regularly use items from news and business websites to aid our teaching and encourage you to discuss and challenge what you read and hear.  We have a good number of students going on to read these subjects at university including Oxbridge.

Teaching takes place in purpose built rooms within the College. We have created the type of environment where a business presentation might take place and not a classroom. There are small tables and comfortable chairs which can be arranged in a U shape around the projector with appropriate white boards and screen.

Economics (AS/A2 & IB Diploma)

Economics  is a subject of interest to anyone who likes current affairs and is concerned about global issues such as poverty , economic development or the environment.  We hope that our students gain a critical understanding of the economic world in which they live, and they are able to apply economic concepts to real world problems and situations. It is  an ideal choice if you want to go on to study  economics, politics, philosophy, accountancy, management, or international relations, work in the City or law or be a journalist, civil servant or entrepreneur in the future.

The students who are most suited to Economics are able to communicate their ideas in words and numbers, so you need to be literate and reasonably numerate.  It is a theoretical subject which seeks to be scientific in its approach to understanding the workings of the economy, so you also need to be a logical thinker who enjoys analysing problems and data.

Economics and Business   (AS/A Level)

This course will give you a good grounding in the main functions of business management and an understanding of the economic environment in which businesses have to live. In order to be successful and enjoy the subject you should have good numeracy skills, be willing to adopt a problem solving approach and take an interest in global  business and economic affairs.

The course can prepare you for degree courses in business studies or economics. At sixth form level the subject can be successfully combined with many others. It is a popular choice for students of maths and sciences, modern languages or humanities. It is also helpful for students taking a more practical subject such as Art, Design Technology, Food Technology, or Physical Education.
