Overview of Modern Languages

At the Royal High School we offer you a fantastic range of languages in the Sixth Form College. We run A level courses in French, German, Spanish and Italian. We also intend to introduce IB diploma courses in French, German and Spanish. In addition you have the opportunity to attend Beginners’ Mandarin and Russian classes as part of our extra-curricular programme. We also intend to offer twilight sessions in French, German, Spanish and Italian for those pupils who have never studied the language but would like to learn some basics.

We believe that learning a language is an essential part of your all round education. It will help to broaden your linguistic and cultural horizons, offer you greater insight into the wider international world and deepen your understanding of history, philosophy, art and literature.

It will open up your career opportunities; linguists are highly sought after for their transferable skills across a range of careers. Many of our students go on to study languages at university, combining their languages with a vast range of other subjects. Recent leavers have gone on to study German and Law, Spanish and History, Italian and Design, French and European studies.

As a sixth form linguist you would be encouraged to take part in a variety of trips and courses. You could travel to Germany on a British Council residential course, take part in work experience in France, at the European parliament for example, visit Spain or Italy as part of our sixth form exchanges. We also run cultural visits to major European cities such as Berlin and Madrid.

You would have the opportunity to take part in theatre and cinema visits, attend lectures and study days in the language and take part in cross-curricular workshops such as a recent Brecht theatre workshop.

You would be able to access all our audio material via your tablet PC, anywhere, anytime on the school site, offering you fantastic opportunities for independent learning. You would also be able to make the most of the latest software and online resources which we incorporate into our Sixth form teaching.

Our library is well stocked with foreign language DVDs and music CDs allowing you to broaden your cultural and linguistic experience. In addition we have a wide range of reference texts to meet all your academic needs.

Your study of a language at Sixth form level would be engaging and enjoyable. We want our linguists to be passionate about languages and the fantastic opportunities that they offer.
