A Level PE

An A Level PE student, you will be someone who has achieved a high practical level in one or more sports (including dance). With a 35% practical element, you need to submit two practical activities in your AS year, taking one of these only through to A2. The 65% theory element is examined with one paper involving anatomy and physiology, contemporary and historical issues, and the psychology of sport. A Level PE fits well with other A Level choices such as biology, psychology and history.

We find our trips to important sporting centres such as Bath University and Clifton College's Real Tennis courts help to reinforce topics discussed in classroom lessons.

The broad nature of A-level PE allows you to pursue a variety of courses at university.

Obvious routes into Higher Education include Sports Science, PE Teaching and Sports Coaching, Management and Development. Other degree choices following A-level PE include Physiotherapy, Chiropractic Care and Psychology. Many successful A-level PE students have used the in depth study of Anatomy and Physiology and Exercise Physiology during the course to begin careers as researchers in establishments such as Loughborough and Exeter. With our strong links to Bath University there will be a host of opportunities for our College leavers studying A-level PE. Recent leavers from The Royal High School have been awarded Sports Scholarships at Exeter University and followed courses in Sports Science.

Leaver comment

"I have really enjoyed studying A-Level PE over the last two years. It has allowed me to gain an understanding of many areas of sport from important historical events, such as the Berlin Olympics, to learning how different energy systems are used during exercise."
