Bienvenue dans le départment de français –the home of the language of culture and love!
French is an ever-current and ever-important language. It is spoken by more than 200 million people worldwide, is the language of the international job market and is the language used for travel in many French-speaking countries – Tahiti, Monaco, Switzerland, the Seychelles and many more.
By choosing to study French as part of the IB course with our team of vibrant, experienced and enthusiastic French specialists, our students make an investment in their future by preparing themselves for our increasingly global society.
The IB course is extremely practical and thematic, enabling the girls to develop their vocabulary and fluency whilst studying some key issues within French culture. This is largely done with a very visual angle, making use of the latest videos and films and learning to understand TV 5, one of France’s primary television channels. We also hold very dynamic discussions in French on the theory of knowledge, helping the girls express their thoughts on how they are learning within the target language.
Just as our younger student, our Sixth Form students benefit from the chance to partake in a study trip to Bordeaux, during which they stay with host families and enjoy many fun activities, leisure excursions and also lessons in the morning taught by French specialist teachers. One student who took part in the trip said "This year's French trip to Bordeaux was one of the best trips I have ever been on". (Bliss, Year 12 Student)
Specific preparation lessons are offered for those wishing to take the Oxbridge entry exam, provided by Head of French, Mrs Catherine White. Each year, several of our students are successfully accepted into Oxbridge courses and courses at other top universities across the UK.
A wonderful highlight of each year is a special meal we hold to say goodbye to our Year 13 students, held in a local French restaurant, celebrating two years of impressive skill development and memories.
