Last week, we were delighted to welcome back alumna Juliette Marinelli, who is in her third year of studying Classics at the University of Nottingham, to share her experiences at university with our students from KS3 to KS5.

Juliette began the session with a lively quiz on identifying myths from Greek pottery and then spoke passionately about her degree, which builds on her studies of Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation at Royal High. She described her participation in two fascinating archaeological digs in Italy and Greece, including the challenges of excavating Etruscan tombs where the roof could collapse at any moment! Juliette’s study of bones meant she was able to identify and conduct further work on an excavated tibia and this study has further opened her eyes to the value of forensic pathology. The international nature of the digs, working with others from all over the world was also incredibly enriching. Clearly thriving in her course, Juliette explained how Classics combines literary, historical, and scientific skills—highlighting that using GIS mapping feels surprisingly similar to analysing a classical language.

Juliette also reflected on her time at RHB and her love of Classics, being both a life-long member of Myth Club and winner of the Festival of Latin Drama back in Year 9 when studying Gratin (a combination of Greek and Latin). She emphasised how a Classics degree is highly respected by universities and employers alike, opening doors to a whole range of careers, thanks to the analytical and communication skills it develops. Perhaps even more importantly, she emphasised just what fun and how interesting and diverse a subject it is!

The session concluded with a fantastic Q&A, with many questions from both students and staff. Juliette shared her ambition to pursue a Master’s in Osteology and eventually become a lecturer—a goal we all agreed she will achieve with great success.

It was a real privilege to have Juliette back and see where a classical education at RHB can take you!
