The Head's Study
“ In moments of nostalgia, I miss the simplicity of the weekly exchange of letters we sent home from boarding school or the brown inter-office communication envelopes that would drop on my desk in my first job before the advent of e-mails.”Mrs Reynolds, Head
I was always struck by the memorable image conjured up by the phrase that ‘in the land of the blind, the one-eyed monster is king.’ The Cyclops, gruesome as he was, I felt was hard done by in mythology; who wouldn’t be a little grumpy with only one eye? It piqued my imagination that what could be seen as a disadvantage was, in the right context, monarch making material.
So too with communication. In moments of nostalgia, I miss the simplicity of the weekly exchange of letters we sent home from boarding school or the brown inter-office communication envelopes that would drop on my desk in my first job before the advent of e-mails. Things have moved on from these Cycloean days of communication. I wonder what image would be most apt now in this era of mass communication?
As if there wasn’t enough, Covid unlocked a cornucopia of options for how to communicate. At School, Teams, podcasts, vlogs, Zoom jostled with systems already tried and tested such as Firefly and email. We added to this wealth of communication channels by introducing Classlist to ensure all parents were able to communicate with each other on School related matters. It was like being in an old-fashioned sweet shop (more nostalgia) – spoilt for choice.
18 months in and, a little as sweets are ultimately all pretty similar, so too are the many ways we can communicate. And, as with many things in life, I am a great believer that the simpler the better. We live busy family lives. We need to plan ahead, to not miss out, to avoid the inadequate parent moments of not having spotted something that is going on in your child’s busy school day (or is that just me?)
So, to the Cyclops’ solution: one weekly drop of school communications into your email inbox to accompany the fortnightly Senior School Weekly Bulletin we introduced last year. We will do this at the Prep School too. I hope this makes our communication and your lives simpler and clearer.
And the image that could replace the one-eyed King in this era of mass communication? I like to think of a sleek, intelligent, stream-lined dolphin.
