The Friends

Friends of The Royal High School

The Friends of The Royal High School is a lively group of parents, staff and the Head Teachers from both the Junior and Senior School, with two key aims:

  • to raise funds for extra-curricular opportunities for the girls
  • to build a friendly and inclusive school community

We are an active group who arrange a wide range of social and fundraising events throughout the year. Events in recent years have included an annual Christmas Bazaar, a special Gala Ball, annual Fireworks Display, School Discos, Wine Tasting Nights, Dog Shows, Quiz Nights and more, which are well supported by the parents and teachers. The Friends also receive an impressive amount of money from the second-hand uniform shop.

Each year, through the funds we raise, we are able to support the school by making donations that facilitate the purchasing of specialist resources and ‘icing on the cake’ equipment for the girls. In the last year alone, this has included a state of the art 3D printer, baby grand piano, mobile floodlights and digital photography equipment.

We also offer the Sixth Form students the opportunity to be considered for an Education Award, awarded each year to applicants who are seeking support for a gap year project, initiative or endeavour that will further their career aspirations.

All of this is only possible due to the commitment of those involved in running the Friends initiatives, and those who support the events and activities throughout the year.

The Friends Committee is headed up by Chair, Melanie Vance,  who is mum to Erin and India in the Junior School. Mel took over from Nicola Wood at the start of 2016 – Nicola led the group for many years, with incredible success and we are so grateful for all of her efforts and commitment.

The Committee meet once every half term (6 times per year) where we plan social events, chat through new ideas and enjoy evaluating requests for new, exciting initiatives to be funded from the coffers! It is a stimulating, enjoyable and inclusive group and the meetings are good fun and informal.

We would be delighted to welcome new members who may be interested in making a contribution, no matter how big or small. We always need people who have great ideas and time to offer here and there (no special skills required, just a little commitment). Everyone is welcome, from those who may be able to serve teas at parents evenings a couple of times per year through to those who may like to help run events like the Christmas Bazaar. It’s a great way to become better connected to the school and really feel like part of an important community.
