This year the Royal High School is celebrating 20 years since its official foundation in 1998 when Bath High and the Royal School merged to become one.
Last Thursday we launched our 20th anniversary celebrations with a special whole school assembly at the Senior School with guest speaker Miss Margaret Winfield, former Head of Bath High and first Head of the Royal High School until her retirement in 2000. Miss Winfield gave a wonderful talk to a packed Sports Hall telling us what it was like to bring two schools together of differing cultures, one a boarding school and the other a day school who were fierce sporting rivals.
We heard about the tremendous resilience, determination, generosity of spirit, ability to compromise and teamwork that was needed by all involved to make the merger the success that it was. We were shown pictures of the Sports Hall being built 20 years ago to accommodate the larger and newly merged school whilst Miss Winfield described it being officially opened by Jeremy Guscott. A visit from HRH Prince Michael of Kent to both the Junior School, then at Hope House, and the Senior School followed. We were also introduced to another special guest, Ambrose the teddy bear, given to Miss Winfield when she left on 5th April 2000 and who reminds her of the Royal High every day!
Having cut a celebration cake, Miss Winfield, who will be 80 later this month, was presented with a bouquet by Gemma Elliot of Year 13 whose late mother Justine was Miss Winfield’s last head girl at Bath High.
We were also joined by alumna Maxine Harle, part of the Royal High’s first Year 7, Mrs Jane Robb, Chair of the board of Governors and former Governor Dr Mary Ede and of course our Registrar, Miss Lynda Bevan all of whom were part of the Royal High’s first assembly 20 years ago.
The birthday atmosphere continued throughout the day when all Junior and Senior School staff and pupils had the opportunity to enjoy some cake because, after all, ‘there’s always a time for cake!’
